Coming from the land that we often associate with the Looney Toons character Taz, Psycroptic’s sound is as energetic as their cartoon mascot. With the release of their new CD Ob(Servant), you really can’t expect any less than fast pace and brutal, like any other heavy metal band should be. Although I don’t recommend confusing fonts for any band name on the album cover; I found myself looking through the information sent with the CD just to figure out their name. Plus, this font is highly overused- you would agree if you walked down the metal section at any music store.

As a long patron of metal, it can be scary to open yourself up to new metal bands. Many metal bands sound almost the same; giving new metal bands a chance can be quite scary and annoying. Although the screams and shrieks are still hard to understand, this CD only proves Psycroptic’s talent remains way beyond generic metal. Their ability to have fast pace songs and keep variety is something that not too many bands achieve. The lead singer Jason Peppiatt seems to tie all of the songs together with this range of vocals, switching from belting out high pitches to a low, haunting growl.

Listening to Ob(Servant) made me feel as if I was in some hardcore action/horror movie kicking some zombie behind. I will guarantee you, you will not be able to sit in one spot and listen to this album. I couldn’t imagine how insane the crowd must be if listening to the CD makes you want to randomly break out a mosh pit.
