I hate Christian metal so the first three tracks on Edguy’s Tinnitus Sanctus had me worried. Halfway through track three, “The Pride of Creation,” I’m just confused.
Musically, Edguy has the power-pop metal thing down. Decent guitar work, barely discernible bass and fast percussion are all present and accounted for. The vocals are soaring and understandable, but that ends up being a negative for me. Part of the time the lyrics are about God’s mighty fire and how man should be humble about being the best thing God ever made. The rest of the time, Edguy is questioning why people shouldn’t be just a little bit bad. After all, if no one sins, crucifying Jesus was a waste of time. Then they go back to reminding the listener how much life would suck without God to turn to.
I have this figured out, right? Edguy is complex, examining the paradox between the pleasure of the flesh and spiritual ecstasy. That has to be it, otherwise it just doesn’t make sense how a band can start an album with a song called “Ministry of Saints” and finish it off with a bonus track titled “Aren’t You a Little Pervert Too?!”
The bonus track, introduced as being “for our troops who beat the shit out of bad people and their families,” is more like something you’d hear on The Bob and Tom Show. It’s a two minute song in praise of a woman who gives good head. This is the only song that makes sense. The good Christian girls have to be good at fellatio because they don’t put out.
