Evidence – Unlearning Volume 2 – Album Review

In 2011, I reviewed Cats & Dogs for Vice Magazine. The second solo release from Evidence — the gravel-voiced wordsmith and producer best known for his work with hip-hop stalwarts Dilated Peoples — was great. I remember writing a glowing piece about his craftsmanship, only to see my editor “spice it up” with a random reference to both guns and dicks that I definitely didn’t write. It was an embarrassing lesson in how an edit can completely derail intent, and an introduction that my editor had a stereotypical understanding of Hip Hop and had to add to it with some shitty gun reference. Get fucked. With how much I respect Evidence’s brand of authentic, unflashy storytelling, my reviews never needed shock value to shine.

Fast forward to 2025 and Unlearning Vol. 2 lands with the confidence of a veteran who still has bars worth hearing. It’s good — not great — but solid in that classic Evidence way. His flow remains sharp, conversational, and deeply rhythmic, gliding over dusty, head-nod beats that feel both nostalgic and lived-in. The production never chases trends, instead leaning into the kind of vintage samples that you keep finding yourself trying to place. “Staying Alive” sounds like it could’ve been a coin flip between Evidence and Common, while “Outta Bounds” stands out with a hypnotic motif that seems to teeter just out of key, daring the listener to stay with it — and rewarding those who do.

At fifteen tracks but barely over a half hour, Unlearning Vol. 2 feels like a mixtape dropped between deeper thoughts — like he’s still editing his own story. Evidence has too much to say for that small a footprint, but what’s here is tight, intentional, and worthy of repeat listens. It may not break new ground, but it reminds us why he’s still one of the most consistent craftsmen in hip-hop: no gimmicks, no gloss — just bars, beats, and the truth, delivered with the calm precision of someone who’s been great for a long time and knows it.
