Between cheap or even free recording software, home recording setups, and trying to keep up with the insane production on a lot of pop albums, it’s never been easier to over-produce an album. With Mike Viola helping Dawes’ Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith at the production helm, there’s a clear, confident hand guiding the whole thing. Viola’s touch brings out the best in the brothers’ songwriting, making every note feel perfectly placed without ever feeling too polished or removed from its roots. Oh Brother is a smooth, no-nonsense ride for those who just want to chill out and have a good beer on the porch.
Dawes has always made music for people who just want good tunes without the drama, and Oh Brother adds another album to their arsenal. Lyrically, Dawes is still delivering thoughtful reflections and spinning yarns about everyday living, but Oh Brother also embraces the space between the words—making the melodies flit to and fro and letting the songs breathe.
But at just 42 minutes across nine tracks, my only complaint is that it’s just too goddamned short. It left me utterly satisfied but still craving more. But what about second breakfast, amirite? But, I suppose that desire for more just adds to it the experience. Less is more, and Dawes knows how to make every minute count.
