Only For The Night, Pickaxe, and The Sleeping Sea King

Let me tell you about these new guys in town called Only For The Night. One of the guitar players and I used to date. Three of the five guys played together in a band called Fight To The Last. One of them is married. One of them is a drummer. Together, they are fucking brilliant.

I was excited when I heard their demos on www.myspace.com/oftn, but when I saw them live is when I fell in love. A lot of it has to do with the fact that I get a boner from seeing my friends succeed and doing stuff they love. Don’t get me wrong though, the music is great if you like A Wilhelm Scream or Rise Against, which I do, so naturally I’m a big fan. The vocals are powerful and edgy while still being melodic and pristine with a surprisingly wide range. The music is fuelled by sheer emotion and love of music, punk, rock, and all things that make you wanna jump into the person standing next to you.

I really love watching these guys play despite my complete and utter hatred for smoke machines. They all look great. That night, I was most impressed by the bass player’s enthusiasm. Way to go Tony, all eyes were on you. So they sound good, look great, and wouldn’t ya know they play a pretty good cover- whether you love the song or hate the song, hearing the familiar opening notes of Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” just made me smile. I was disappointed when Spike started singing it like he wanted you to know he hated it, but I give the guys kudos for having that song on the set list. They’re still pretty new to the scene, but these guys are definitely something to check out.

Pickaxe rolled ZZ Top beards, Monster, and Queens of the Stone Age all into one tight little bundle.

The Sleeping Sea King blew me away so much, my little notebook simply reads “The Sleeping Sea King is so amazing I don’t even know how to put it into words.” True story. Andre is hands down one of, if not the best drummer I have ever seen ever. These guys know how to move a crowd. They know how to rock out. They know how to make the ladies moist. I’ve been a long time fan of theirs and if they don’t become huge there is something definitely wrong with this world. They are rock and roll in its purest form. It’s beautiful, it’s sexy, it makes me dance and forget I have a job to do.

Both TSSK and Pickaxe are playing The Doll Hut on the 31st of July. Check these cats out at www.myspace.com/thesleepingseaking and www.myspace.com/pickaxeie.
