First Aid Kit – Live At The Observatory

When asked how to describe Sweden’s First Aid Kit, I usually go with “Mumford & Sons little sisters.” After seeing Johanna & Klara Söderberg, the Swedish sisters that comprise First Aid Kit, I might have to think of something else, as they blew apart any comparisons in their live show. With Samantha Crain as the lone opener, it seemed like a particularly intimate show, even with the Observatory jam-packed with Lumineers lookalikes. Crain’s story-telling between songs was fun, even if she admitted that the song “Devil’s In Boston” is actually about New York City, but whatever.

When First Aid Kit hit, they hit with the tightness of a band that’s been playing together for decades. I guess being sisters helps. While their songs off of both Stay Gold and The Lion’s Roar sounded phenomenal, what really got me was how genuinely happy they were to perform music. The audience would catch the Söderbergs unable to hide their smiles and that goes a long way in a live show. My wife has been playing their albums consistently for a few years, but the pale in comparison to their live show. If you have the opportunity to see them, do it.
